Domains Glossary: Domain Registries
Registries are organisations that have been given the right to manage and distribute domain names within a designated top level domains.
They maintain the WHOIS database which indicates whether a domain name is available or registered. If a name is registered, the database will provide information on the registrar that manages the name and on the name servers for the domain.
Registries also maintain the root servers for their top level domains. For example, Network Solutions manages the registry and root servers for the ".com", ".net", ".org", and ".edu" domains. Neustar manages the .biz registry and Nominet manages the .uk registry
