8 tips to Raise your Search Engine Ranking

8 tips to Raise your Search Engine Ranking

No one can guarantee you high rankings in the organic search engines other than the Search Engines themselves.  Treat anyone who makes a promise of "guaranteed” results with suspicion. If you follow the guidelines of the search engines and the following tips, that will help.

We are a leading UK Domain Registration Service that also offers Search Marketing, and with more than 10 years of experience we know a lot about what works and what doesn't

1. Play by the rules

Each of the search engines have their own guidelines, you need to read and re-read these then follow them as closely as you can.  If you deviate from what they are saying you always run the risk of picking up a penalty.

2. Content is King

It's an old cliché but one that happens to be true in the Search Engine World.  High quality content works well, after all the Search Engines are text relevancy engines designed to find the most relevant pages that match a search query.  It shouldn't be surprising therefore that blank pages don't perform well.  You might think that your website is text rich, but view the source code, we often see pages which appear to consist of text by which in fact are images, which are blank pages to the Search Engines.

Recently the leading Search Engine Google has started to include user metrics in its Algorithm making it more important than ever that you build your website using unique quality content.

The following metrics are now part of Google's algorithm,

· Time on page - higher scores better

· Bounce rate - lower rates scores better

· Uniqueness of content - duplicate or scraped content gets pushed down or excluded

· Author reputation - Authors with a known following on Google perform better

· Social engagement - More Facebook, Google +1 and Twitter activity scores better.

So with this in mind review your content and delete, replace or re-write any page that doesn't appear to be truly high quality.

3. URLS

If your urls contain your keywords that will help try to create descriptive page urls, these will help, but it's not a major factor.

4. Pictures and videos

If you add pictures make sure they have alt tags.  Videos can be great if they fit with a page, and can help with the time on page metrics mentioned above.

5. Meta tags

These are less important that you might think when reading around the articles on the internet.  The Title tag is valuable and should contain your key phrases, the Meta Description tag is useful as its text is used in Organic Search Results.  The keywords tag is of low importance.  You should ensure that every page Meta tags of some form.

6. Links

Collect quality links for your site, try to find related sites in your niche and ask them to link to you.  If you think of links as votes for your site then the more numbers and the better quality votes you have the better it will be.  Quality is becoming increasingly important and Google has started to filter out sites that have weak profiles

7. Social

Social media is becoming more and more important; make sure that you have your own active Twitter, Facebook and Google +1 pages.  These are growing sources of traffic for your website, and the level of Google +1 engagement is a factor in the Search Algorithm now.

8. Stuff to avoid

Avoid services that offer to blast your domain name to 10,000's of search engines and directories; this is likely to be counterproductive.  Instead focus on the 7 positive points above and you should see your rankings rise.
